Actress Emily Blunt has expressed her hope for a sequel to the cult classic sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow, also known as Live Die Repeat. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Blunt shared that she is “so ready” for a sequel. However, despite her enthusiasm, there are no guarantees that the movie will happen anytime soon.
Blunt made it clear that she is not the one standing in the way of a sequel. She assured listeners that she is not an impediment to the project’s realization. Blunt had even read a script for a potential sequel, sent to her by Doug Liman, the director of the first Edge of Tomorrow. However, the chances of seeing this sequel come to life may be slim.
Despite her desire for a sequel, Blunt does acknowledge the challenges in bringing it to fruition. Expressing her wish for a follow-up film, she admitted, “I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how.” Blunt humorously questioned the number of Mission Impossible films that her co-star Tom Cruise needs, suggesting that he might be a factor in the delay.
A Character-driven Approach
Doug Liman, the writer-director of Edge of Tomorrow, has previously stated that he envisions a “more character-driven” sequel. Rather than relying solely on bigger action sequences, Liman believes that the strength of the film lies in the performances of its leading actors. “No visual effect is going to top what you’re going to get from a great scene performed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt,” Liman expressed.
The Power of the Stars
The ultimate decision to proceed with a sequel may come down to the availability and commitment of both Cruise and Blunt. Liman explained that in Hollywood, the stars often serve as the gatekeepers for projects. If Cruise and Blunt were to express their readiness to start production, the film would likely move forward. Their involvement holds significant weight in determining whether Edge of Tomorrow gets a sequel or not.
Liman, meanwhile, has several projects on his plate. One of his upcoming ventures involves partnering with NASA and SpaceX to send Cruise into space for a film. With various commitments and new projects, Liman’s involvement in a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel adds another layer of uncertainty to its future.
While Emily Blunt remains hopeful for a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow and is eager to bring it to life, the path to its realization seems challenging. The availability and commitment of Tom Cruise and Blunt, along with the director’s involvement in other projects, add to the uncertain future of the film. Despite the obstacles, fans of the original movie can only hope that the stars align and a sequel becomes a reality in the not-too-distant future.
