The online marketplace powerhouse, Etsy, has come under fire as many of its sellers express frustration and distress over the platform’s payment reserve system. This system places a hold on a portion of sellers’ earnings, causing financial strain and hindering their ability to sustain their businesses and personal expenses.

Etsy implemented the payment reserve system as a protective measure for both buyers and sellers. According to the platform’s terms of service, reserves are placed on accounts when sellers are new, experience a sudden influx of orders, or consistently ship orders without tracking information. The rationale behind reserves is to motivate sellers to work through their backlog and ship purchases promptly, thereby releasing their funds in full. Additionally, the system serves as a safeguard against potential scams, as it keeps customers’ money in Etsy’s possession in case any issues arise.

Unfortunately, many sellers, including longstanding and reputable ones, have had reserves placed on their accounts without any clear explanation from Etsy. This lack of communication has left sellers feeling frustrated and stressed due to the delayed cash flow, which directly impacts their ability to cover operating costs and fulfill orders. It is worth noting that the payment reserve system disproportionately affects sellers who create custom-made products with longer production and shipping times.

The Negative Impact on Sellers’ Businesses

For these sellers, the reserve system interrupts their cash flow, making it exceptionally challenging to purchase materials and sustain their businesses. With limited access to their earnings, these sellers find themselves dipping into their personal savings or relying on credit to fund their expenses. As a result, restocking is reduced, custom work requests decline, and overall business stability is compromised.

Etsy’s Response and the Sellers’ Rebuttal

Etsy contends that less than 2% of shops currently have a payment reserve placed on their accounts, with most of them having less than $50 held. Additionally, the company assures sellers that funds on reserve are typically released within two weeks. However, sellers argue that these claims fail to address the underlying issues they face.

Sellers have pointed out that qualifying for Etsy’s Star Seller program, which exempts sellers from reserves, is not feasible for everyone. The program rewards shops that meet shipping and customer service benchmarks, but some sellers face unique constraints that prevent them from meeting these requirements. This includes sellers who handle special orders or have longer lead times that exceed Etsy’s processing window. Consequently, the payment reserve system disproportionately affects those who are unable to navigate Etsy’s systems successfully.

The Way Forward

The payment reserve system has triggered significant backlash among long-time Etsy sellers who rely on timely access to their funds. While the system’s intention is to protect buyers and prevent scams, it has inadvertently caused financial difficulties and instability for legitimate sellers. It is now up to Etsy to address these concerns and collaborate with sellers to find effective solutions that support their businesses and livelihoods.
