However, Microsoft is addressing this issue with a new feature in the Insider Preview Build 25915 of Windows 11. This feature enables independent refresh rates for different screens, dynamically adjusting power demands based on the displayed content.

Traditionally, all monitors in a setup would run at a constant refresh rate, resulting in unnecessary power consumption. The new feature in Windows 11 allows users to choose different refresh rates for each monitor. For example, while gaming on one screen at the full 144Hz, 240Hz, or 300Hz refresh rate, the user can simultaneously play a video on another screen at a lower refresh rate, such as 30Hz. This reduces power demands on the secondary monitor, optimizing power efficiency without sacrificing the performance on the primary display.

The Windows blog post highlighting this new build mentions that the improved refresh rate logic greatly benefits multitasking scenarios that rely on refresh rate synchronization. This includes tasks like gaming while watching a video. Recent tests conducted by ComputerBase have shown that enabling variable refresh rates, denoted as Adaptive Sync, FreeSync, or G-Sync, helps curb the historically high idle power draw of Radeon RX 7000-series and Radeon RX 6000-series cards. This improvement in power efficiency is specific to AMD GPUs, as Nvidia and Intel graphics cards already exhibit more comfortable default idle power states.

In addition to the power-saving benefits for desktop users, the latest Windows preview build includes a feature tailored for mobile devices. When the dynamic refresh rate (DRR) is selected alongside Battery Saver mode, Windows will automatically reduce the refresh rate to conserve battery life. This feature aligns with the capabilities of gaming laptops like Razer’s Blade machines, which allow users to specify a refresh rate for gaming panels when operating on battery power or at specific battery levels.
